Goodbye, David Bowie

There’s been a lot written on the internet since the breaking of yesterday’s news of the death of David Bowie. Some of it touching and heartfelt, some eye-rolling (BBC News website, I’m looking at you…) but most of it the stunned surprise of fans around the world reacting to the death of a truly original pioneer in music and performance.

Most musicians are fans too, even Bowie. Jacques Brel, Anthony Newley, Klaus Nomi, Bing Crosby and many others fed into his constantly-evolving stage persona and writing styles. More has been said by better commentators than me, so I thought it might be a fitting (and possibly fun) thing to do to call on as many musicians as possible via social media to record a cover of a Bowie song and upload it to their websites for fans to download for free, using the hashtag #FreeBowieCover. Feel free to hassle any musicians you know, point them in the direction of this post, and let’s see how many of these can be created to celebrate the life and work of an incredible man. They don’t have to be perfect (mine certainly isn’t), they don’t have to be faithful recreations of the original, they just have to be done. Mine is here in the store and can also be played from the media player on the front page of the site.

Happy trails, David.
